Discovery Science Center's summer exhibition
Pirates - featuring Treasure!
May 25 to
Sept. 9, 2007
Discovery Science Center presents an
exhibition on the science of pirates. Pirates –
featuring Treasure! will feature hands-on activities
that include panning for gold, knot tying and
hunting for treasure!
Guests will take an adventure back in time to
understand the life of a pirate. Learn about famous
pirates such as Ann Bonne, Blackbeard and Hippolyte
de Bouchard. Explore the principles of sailing and
how the stars are used in navigation.
The educational goal of the Treasure! portion of the
exhibition is to answer the questions: What is
treasure? Who hunts for treasure? Why do they hunt
treasure? How do people hunt for treasure? On a
personal level, the exhibit also provokes the
question what do you treasure?
Hands-on activities allow guests the chance to try
tools of treasure hunting and investigate treasures.
Guests may operate a Remote Operated Vehicle,
experiment with metal detectors, calculate their
weight in gold and learn about the Global
Positioning System and geocaching.
Special exhibit features include actual artifacts
from shipwrecks and other treasure sites.
The learning stations include lessons on: Floating
and Sinking ~ Buoyancy; Navigation ~ using a sextant
and hand-held GPS; Cartesian Diver~ demonstrating
gas laws and buoyancy; Knots ~ what they are used
for; and Sails of Boats.
